Sawdust Collector is the curatorial & producing collective of artists Barbara Adler, Cole Schmidt and James Meger.

Dedicated to programming experimental yet accessible interdisciplinary events in Vancouver, Sawdust Collector has produced over eighty shows since its inception in September 2016, including an intimate weekly series at the Gold Saucer Studio and showcase events at The Wise Hall, China Cloud and Red Gate Revue Stage. Regular programming includes a biannual New Works residency, Guest Curators and concert presentations featuring improvised and creative music, contemporary dance, film, theatre, literary arts and new media performance.

By bringing together established and emerging local and touring artists across genres and disciplines, Sawdust Collector works to ignite relationships between audiences and artistic communities, with a special focus on mentorship, collaboration and cross-disciplinary discourse.

Past artists include: Kokoro Dance, Horsepowar, Darius Jones, Kate Franklin, Peggy Lee's Film in Music and Echo Painting, Lesley Telford, Giorgio Magnanensi, Michael Schumacher, Mina Shum, Inhabitants, Lucien Durey, Leah Abramson, TJ Dawe, Alex Mackenzie and Talking Pictures.

About

Barbara Adler is an interdisciplinary artist and writer whose work brings together literary performance, composition, and event making to explore the intersections between text, music, design and theatre. Barbara is a veteran of Canada's spoken word community, recognized for her solo work and for collaborations with dance, theatre, music and film artists. As an independent producer, Barbara's work explores the potential for live performance and artistic labour to create an ethos of critique and care in the public sphere. At Sawdust Collector, Barbara’s role focuses on building cross-disciplinary connections and increasing access in the experimental art community. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studies and a BA in Art and Cultural Studies, both from Simon Fraser University. More at tenthousandwolves.

Cole Schmidt is an active participant in Vancouver's creative music scene. As a composer, Cole spends the majority of his time writing, recording and performing with Juno Award winning ensemble, Pugs & Crows, and newly formed group SICK BOSS. He can also be heard alongside other local artists such as Marin Patenaude, Copilots, ITISYSM, and Peggy Lee's Echo Painting. In 2013, he received the Vancouver Mayor's Arts Award for Emerging Artist in Music. Cole has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, including a 5 week tour with Drip Audio's DarkBlueWorld in Eastern Europe and Russia. As a programmer at Sawdust Collector, Cole focuses on connecting touring artists with the local creative music community, and providing mentorship opportunities for emerging artists. He now works for the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

James Meger is an active bassist and composer working primarily in the fields of jazz, free improvisation and rock music. He has worked with many local and international players such as Wayne Horvitz, Lori Freedman, Ig Henneman and Kris Davis and plays in many ensembles such as: Ron Samworth's Dogs Do Dream, Peggy Lee's Echo Painting, Sick Boss, The Alicia Hansen band, The Bruno Hubert Trio, Ten Thousand Wolves, The Now Orchestra, Cow Trance and many more. James’ programming focus at Sawdust Collector is free improvisation, and experimental multi-media works.
